Throughout my writing career I have had a particular interest in government owned naval dockyards. This originally stemmed from the time I was living on the Isle of Grain, this situated at the mouth of the River Medway. Immediately opposite stood the former dockyard of Sheerness while only a few miles up river lay the (then) still functioning yard of Chatham. Initially my interest was confined to the dockyards of Kent but since then has considerably widened. Currently I am researching the state dockyards of the Mediterranean, especially those of the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires.
My naval dockyard publications:
The Chatham Dockyard Story (1981, 1989)
Royal Dockyards (1982)
Royal Dockyards (1989)
Royal Dockyards in Camera (1989)
Chatham Dockyard in Old Photographs (1998)
The year 2009 will see one further dockyard book, this looking at the industrial transformation of Chatham. As such, it will concentrate on the years 1815 to 1865 and will consist of over 200 transcribed documents with a commentary. Entitled Chatham Dockyard, 1815-65, it is to be published by the Naval Records Society.
